Meet Labor Lens: Evidence-Based Birth Education for Pregnancy, Labor, Birth, and Beyond

When I first became a doula, I assumed the most important part of my job would be supporting people during labor. However i have learned that some of the most meaningful moments happen long before contractions begin.

They happen when someone looks at me after a prenatal appointment and says,

"I have no idea what any of it actually means."

Or after a cervical exam.

"I'm three centimeters, 80% effaced, and -2 station. Is that good?"

Or when labor starts.

"These contractions hurt. Is this prodromal labor? False labor? Real labor?"

Those are the moments where education changes everything.

Not because knowledge changes your birth.

But because understanding changes how you experience it.

That realization is what eventually became Labor Lens.

Birth is physiological. Understanding it shouldn't feel impossible.

I have always believed birth is beautifully simple. Our bodies already know how to labor. Babies already know how to be born. But somewhere along the way, birth became filled with unfamiliar language, medical terminology, and overwhelming amounts of information.

Suddenly you're expected to understand words like:

Dilation.

Effacement.

Station.

Posterior.

Asynclitic.

Active management.

Expectant management.

It's a lot.

And while none of those words are inherently scary, they can feel scary when nobody has taken the time to explain what they actually mean.

One of my favorite parts of being a doula has always been translating those concepts into plain language and helping families understand not just what is happening, but why.

Why I built Labor Lens - an Evidence-Based Birth Education app

For years I found myself saying the same thing to my clients:

"You don't have to remember all of this today."

Because that's simply how our brains work. We rarely learn something the first time we hear it. We learn by coming back to it. Reading it again. Seeing it explained another way and connecting it to an experience.

I wanted my clients to have a place they could return to throughout pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, a place that felt calm, trustworthy, and rooted in physiology rather than fear. Not another pregnancy app telling you your baby is the size of a pineapple.

A place that helped you actually understand birth.

More than a pregnancy app

People sometimes ask if Labor Lens is an AI app.

The truth is, AI is only one small piece of what I've built.

Labor Lens is an evidence-based birth education platform designed to help families understand pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum recovery.

Inside you'll find an ever-growing library of practical, evidence-based learning tools, including:

  • A comprehensive birth education library

  • Labor positions and comfort measures organized by the stage of labor

  • Guides for helping babies who are posterior or asynclitic find more optimal positions

  • A detailed cervical check explainer that breaks down dilation, effacement, and station—and why those numbers matter

  • Birth planning tools that help you understand your options before decisions arise

  • Labor pattern guides that explain the differences between Braxton Hicks, prodromal labor, false labor, and active labor

  • Contraction timers and labor support tools

  • Mental health screening resources during pregnancy and postpartum

  • Recovery education after birth

  • A growing evidence blog that explains birth through physiology rather than fear

  • An AI assistant that answers questions using evidence-based resources and links directly to the research whenever possible

Every feature exists because at some point, someone sitting across from me asked a question.

Physiology comes first

If you know me, you probably know this already. I get far more excited about physiology than procedures. I love understanding why the cervix softens before it opens. Why effacement often tells us more than dilation in early labor. Why babies rotate. Why different labor positions create space within the pelvis. Why contractions change throughout labor.

When we understand physiology, birth begins to make sense. So instead of memorizing facts, we begin seeing how everything connects.

That's the heart of Labor Lens.

Everything is rooted in evidence

One thing became very clear while I was building this: There is no shortage of birth information online.

Unfortunately, there is also no shortage of misinformation. I wanted Labor Lens to feel different. Every educational article is built from trusted professional guidelines, current research, and evidence-based resources.

Whenever possible, you'll find direct links to the studies or source material, because I believe you should be able to explore the evidence for yourself.

The AI works the same way. It isn't designed to generate opinions or pull information from random places on the internet. Instead, it uses the same evidence-based educational content that powers the learning library and provides citations whenever available, helping translate research into everyday language without losing accuracy.

Education creates confidence

Birth will always have some uncertainty.

No app can change that. No doula can change that. No provider can change that. But education changes something equally important. It changes how we move through uncertainty. When we understand what our bodies are doing... When we understand why providers recommend certain interventions.. When we understand our options before we're asked to make decisions then birth becomes less overwhelming.

Not because we know exactly what will happen. But because we understand enough to meet each moment with confidence instead of fear.

That has always been my hope.

Not to replace your doctor, your midwife, your nurse, or your doula. Simply to make birth a little easier to understand. And to give you a place to return to whenever another question comes up.

If you're preparing for birth and looking for evidence-based birth education you can return to again and again, I'd love to invite you to explore Labor Lens. Whether you're trying to understand cervical checks, learn labor positions, create a thoughtful birth plan, navigate an induction, or simply feel more confident in your body's physiology, my hope is that this becomes a trusted companion throughout your pregnancy and birth journey. You can learn more and download the app at https://llamamma.app.

An ever growing labor of love:

Labor Lens is still growing. Every birth I attend teaches me something new, and every thoughtful question from a client has the potential to become another article, another guide, or another tool. My hope is that it continues to become the resource I always wished every family had—not just during labor, but throughout pregnancy, birth, and the transition into parenthood.
